The Commissioner of the General Land Office sits as one of the five members constituting the Legislative Redistricting Board. At present the Board consists entirely of Republicans—all five are Republicans. The Board should be bipartisan. Single party control can lead to abuses, as we’ve seen in the past. I’ll use this seat to issue a clarion call to end the unfair and unconstitutional legislative districting we’ve seen, not just when and if the Board is activated, but throughout the entire year.
I’ll contest and combat Texas’ racial Gerrymandering and minority voter suppression. Those practices destroy our democratic principles, degrade human dignity, and cost us millions in litigation fees.
Finally, I support all efforts to increase Texas voter participation.
